The name of Buenaventura emerges as a show of respect for this small fishing harbor as the Conqueror of Puerto Vallarta was Captain Don Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura, who in 1525 while returning from the coast found the valley where a large group of fearful villagers carrying feathered multi-colored flags and armed with bows and darts, tried to defend their space, but ultimately as a sign of hospitality provided food to their conquerors without a battle.
